Brits follow the sun... 6th February 2008
Brits are still buying holiday homes abroad in a bid to escape the gloom of winter weather at home, and Spain remains a favourite destination.
'Cheap flights and fast Internet access allow more people to make their money stretch further away from the tyranny of the office," reported the Sunday Times Overseas Property section*.
The Costa del Sol, which has been basking in sunshine over the winter months, often tops the list and its year-round season is a very good reason why.
"The arrival of the winter crowds is the biggest change in tourism in Spain in the past 25 years," a property professional is quoted as saying.
Paul Smith, a director of CLC Estates - real estate arm of Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels - is in full agreement. "Not only is the weather kind in winter, with plenty of days when you can sunbathe on the beach, but there's always plenty to do. It's also the time of year golfers love to come as in high summer it is far too hot for them."
In its ranking of 'foreign bolt holes', Spain and Portugal fared equally well with a maximum five stars for accessibility and three each for January weather, value for money and cost of living.
But people should do their homework. If it's warm weather and beaches they want, then don't expect that on Spain's Costa de la Luz, as it's on the Atlantic coast; opt for the appropriately named Costa del Sol with its mountain backed Mediterranean coastline.
Club La Costa builds exceptional quality resort homes in southern Spain, and also in the UK, Tenerife and Turkey. Not only do buyers have the security of dealing with a reputable and established company, with all sites exhibiting its high standards of maintenance and facilities, but homes are often offered with generous leaseback arrangements.
Currently it has new Spanish developments on the horizon. "The quality of finish and interior design can be seen in our previous developments. Before even a brick is laid we have a waiting list of clients interested in purchasing," said Smith.
